Almost 30 years ago I presented my first work ‘Cry pieces’ / ‘Huilstukken’ at Stedelijk Museum Bureau Amsterdam. The group show was called GEDRAAG JE / BEHAVE and all about human behavior in general. My contribution existed of items made from paper tissue in different shapes to make crying look beautiful, feel comfortable and nothing to be ashamed of.

The handkerchief, an underrated small piece of textile, has always intrigued me. A delicate piece of cotton with so much emotion.
Besides blowing your nose in it, the hanky can be used to wave goodbye and dry your tears.

After many years of designing neckwear and especially bow ties, I went back to my conceptual days and created a new item. Using the festive season as a starting point, but also my own personal experience of loss and the state of the world.
-
This bow tie excists of a reusable handkerchief, which you can take out of the neck strap when needed and put back when you dried your tears. Left in its pure and original form as much as possible, I just changed the context, shape and use. It still is a handkerchief, but now it becomes a festive bow tie with emotion. Which I think, really fits these nostalgic holidays.

The bow tie is 100% made from handkerchiefs, including the adjustable neck strap.

The title of this work is in French, because my soulmate and loving friend, who passed away this year, was a passionate French teacher. The title refers to a handkerchief as an accessory, which in French and Dutch is called an ‘accessoire’. The bow tie is a typical evening wear item as in French you would say ‘A ce soir’ for ‘See you tonight’, mouchoir ce soir seems fitting.
